How a Muscle Contracts · Muscles

What starts a contraction inside the fibre?

Calcium uncovers the grip sites — no calcium, no contraction.

The simple answer

At rest, the actin ropes are covered. The myosin arms are ready and willing, but every grip site is blocked — like a climbing wall with tape over all the holds. Calcium is what pulls the tape off.
