Neurons and Signals · Brain

What does a neuron look like?

A cell shaped entirely around receiving, deciding and sending.

The simple answer

A neuron looks like a tree that grew a very long root. Branches at one end collect incoming signals, the cell body adds them up, and a single long fibre carries the result away to the next cells.

Go deeper

Those branches are dendrites, the long fibre is the axon, and one neuron can receive from thousands of others at once. It's constantly summing all that input, and if the total crosses a threshold, it fires. If it doesn't, nothing happens at all.
