The Airway · Lungs

Is it better to breathe through the nose or the mouth?

Air is warmed, moistened and filtered before it goes deeper.

The simple answer

Your nose isn't just an entrance — it's air conditioning. In the fraction of a second air spends inside it, it gets warmed close to body temperature, moistened, and stripped of dust by a lining of mucus and fine hairs.

Go deeper

That matters because the delicate tissue further down works best with warm, damp, clean air. Breathing through your mouth skips most of the conditioning, which is why mouth-breathing cold dry air leaves your throat raw.
