Meet Your Brain · Brain

Do we really only use 10% of our brain?

The 10% myth, the left/right brain myth, and 'you can't grow new neurons'.

The simple answer

Before we go further, let's clear three things out of the way — because each one gets in the way of understanding what the brain actually does.

Go deeper

You do not use 10% of your brain: imaging shows activity throughout, and there is no dormant reserve waiting to be unlocked. You are not 'left-brained' or 'right-brained' as a personality: the hemispheres do specialise somewhat, but essentially every real task uses both, constantly, through the thick bridge between them. And the adult brain is not fixed — connections reorganise throughout life, and some regions do produce new neurons.
