What's the difference between the central and peripheral nervous systems?

A central command post and a body-wide network of wiring.

The simple answer

Your brain doesn't work alone. It sits at the top of a network that reaches every part of you — and the split is simple: the brain and spinal cord are the centre, and everything else is the wiring.

Go deeper

The central nervous system is the brain plus the spinal cord: processing and decision-making. The peripheral nervous system is every nerve running out to skin, muscle and organs, carrying sensation in and commands out. The motor neurons you met in the Muscles module are part of it.
