Three Kinds of Muscle · Muscles

Why doesn't the heart get tired?

Found in one organ only — and it never gets to rest.

The simple answer

There's a muscle in your body that has contracted roughly once a second since before you were born, has never once been told to, and exists in exactly one place. You met it in the Heart module: cardiac muscle.

Go deeper

It's striped like skeletal muscle but behaves nothing like it. Its cells are branched and physically joined end to end, so an electrical signal spreads across the whole sheet — which is how a heart contracts as one coordinated squeeze instead of a twitching crowd.
