Three Kinds of Muscle · Muscles

Why is it called the biceps?

The names are descriptions — once you know the code.

The simple answer

Biceps, triceps, deltoid, gluteus maximus. They sound like spell components, but every muscle name is a plain description written in Latin — and once you crack the pattern you can read most of them on sight.

Go deeper

Biceps means 'two heads' — it attaches at two points up top. Triceps has three. Deltoid is shaped like a delta, the triangular Greek letter. Gluteus maximus is simply 'the biggest one of the buttock'. Names encode shape, size, location, number of attachments, or the job the muscle does.
