What's the difference between an artery and a vein?

Arteries out, veins back, capillaries in between.

The simple answer

Your blood travels through tubes called blood vessels. Arteries generally carry blood away from your heart; veins generally bring it back.

Go deeper

Between them sit the capillaries — vessels so thin that oxygen and nutrients simply drift across their walls into the tissues. Artery → capillary → vein is the standard round trip.
