Meet Your Heart · Heart

Why does the body need a heart?

A muscular organ that pumps blood through the lungs and body.

The simple answer

Your heart is a muscle, and it's working right now — squeezing over and over to push blood out to your lungs and the rest of your body. It's about the size of your fist, and it beats around 100,000 times a day.

Go deeper

The heart sits at the center of the circulatory system. Its pumping keeps blood moving so tissues can receive oxygen and nutrients and get rid of carbon dioxide and other waste. It never takes a break: at rest it moves about 5 litres of blood every minute.
