Meet Your Heart · Heart

Why do we feel the heartbeat on the left if the heart is central?

In the chest between the lungs, behind the breastbone.

The simple answer

Your heart sits in the middle of your chest, between your lungs and behind your breastbone — not on the left, as most people think. It's tilted, so its tip points left. That's the beat you feel.

Go deeper

The heart sits near the center of the chest in a region called the mediastinum, slightly left of the body's midline. It lives inside a protective sac called the pericardium, shielded in front by the breastbone and ribs.
