The Four Chambers · Heart

Why is returning blood called 'used'?

The arrivals hall for oxygen-poor blood from the body.

The simple answer

Blood that has delivered its oxygen comes back to a waiting room at the top right of your heart. That room is the right atrium — where every drop of used blood comes home.

Go deeper

Blood streams in through the superior and inferior vena cava, collects in the right atrium, then moves through the tricuspid valve into the right ventricle. The right atrium's wall also houses the SA node — the heart's pacemaker.
