The Four Chambers · Heart

What is a 'hole in the heart'?

The wall that keeps the two sides strictly apart.

The simple answer

Down the middle of your heart runs a solid wall of tissue, keeping oxygen-poor and oxygen-rich blood from ever mixing. That wall is the septum.

Go deeper

In a healthy heart the septum is a complete seal between the two sides. Before birth every baby has a natural opening in it (blood bypasses the unused lungs in the womb); it normally closes soon after birth.
