Meet Your Lungs · Lungs

Why do the two lungs have different numbers of lobes?

Three sections on the right, two on the left.

The simple answer

Each lung is divided into sections called lobes, like segments of an orange. Your right lung has three. Your left has only two — because the heart claimed the space where the third would have been.

The division isn't decorative. Each lobe receives its own branch of the airway and its own blood supply, so it works as a semi-independent unit — and can be treated, or in surgery removed, largely on its own.
