Meet Your Lungs · Lungs

What counts as part of the respiratory system?

Airway, lungs and breathing muscles working as one machine.

The simple answer

Your lungs can't work alone. They're one part of a system: the tubes that carry air in and out, the lungs where the swap happens, and the muscles that do the actual pulling.

Go deeper

Air enters at the nose or mouth, runs down the throat and windpipe, branches into ever-smaller tubes, and ends in millions of tiny sacs where it meets your blood. Muscles below and between the ribs drive the whole cycle, and a patch of your brainstem sets the pace.
