Meet Your Lungs · Lungs
Every cell burns oxygen and makes carbon dioxide, constantly.
Every cell in your body is burning fuel right now, and burning needs oxygen. The waste from that burning is carbon dioxide — and it's mildly acidic, so letting it pile up shifts your blood chemistry. Breathing solves both problems at once.
You can survive weeks without food and days without water, but only minutes without breathing. The difference is storage: your body can stockpile fuel and fluid, but it holds almost no reserve of oxygen. The supply has to be continuous.
