Meet Your Lungs · Lungs

How much of my chest is lung?

Filling the chest on either side of the heart, caged by the ribs.

The simple answer

Your lungs fill almost your whole chest — from just above your collarbones down to the bottom of your ribs. The heart sits between them, tucked into a notch carved out of the left lung.

Go deeper

The ribcage forms a protective cage around them and the diaphragm, a dome of muscle, forms the floor. They reach higher than most people expect: the top of each lung sits above the first rib, just behind the collarbone.
