Meet Your Muscles · Muscles

How many muscles does the body have?

Around 600 muscles — roughly a third of your body mass.

The simple answer

You have somewhere around 600 skeletal muscles, and together they make up roughly a third to 40% of your body mass. Muscle is, by weight, one of the biggest things you are.

They range absurdly in size: the largest is the gluteus maximus you're probably sitting on, and among the smallest is the stapedius deep in your ear — barely a millimetre long, and its job is to tense a tiny bone so loud sounds don't rattle you.
