Meet Your Muscles · Muscles

Why do I shiver when I'm cold?

Muscles also hold you upright, keep you warm and store fuel.

The simple answer

Movement is the obvious job. But your muscles are also holding your head up right now, generating most of your body heat, and acting as your body's largest reserve of stored fuel.

Go deeper

Shivering is muscle contracting purely to produce heat — the contraction is the point, the movement is a side effect. And muscle is where most of the sugar you eat gets parked, which is why muscle mass matters to how the body handles blood sugar.
