Meet Your Muscles · Muscles

What does a muscle actually do?

Tissue that shortens on command — and does nothing else.

The simple answer

A muscle is a bundle of tissue with exactly one talent: it can get shorter. Everything your body does that looks like movement — walking, blinking, swallowing, smiling — is some arrangement of things getting shorter at the right moment.

Go deeper

That shortening is called contraction, and it happens because millions of microscopic protein arms inside each muscle grab and pull in the same direction at once. Stack enough of them together and you can lift a suitcase.
